A pop-up spa and bar providing affordable treatments as well as a free social space will open in East London (from 24th July until 16th September) as part of the arts festival CREATE. Designed by London studio, Something & Son, the Barking Bathhouse features a traditional wooden sauna, a cool room chilled with dry ice and a pebble beach. Cucumbers grown above the bar will be used to make drinks as well as for spa treatments.
Focusing on establishing personal happiness and wellbeing, workshops, talks and discussions will include, can money can make you happy, chocolate-making, meditation, photoshop makeovers showing how media images of beauty are unattainable and laughter yoga.
The design of the space is inspired by 20th century working men’s bathhouses, ultra modern spas and Barking’s industrial heritage. Assembled from a series of wooden huts, the intention is that once the bathhouse is closed, the pieces will be relocated for continued use by the local community including allotment owners, playgrounds and youth centres.
